It is common-place to see computer users resort to registry cleaning software when they want to speed up their PC's initial startup. Whilst a registry scanner can help with this, there is often a simpler reason your PC startup is slower than a one hour ferry ride.

Many applications these days start running as soon as Windows powers up. Many also try and check if any software updates are available. Having one application do this slows your PC down. Imagine what impact five or six applications doing this would have on your PC.

As the owner and primary user of your PC you shouldn't have to accept that a handful of applications are going to hijack your PC when you want to use it most. Here are some steps to take to identify and remove these applications (if you are running Windows XP or Windows Vista):

Select "run" from the start menu or open a command prompt window.
Type "msconfig" and hit enter (Vista may stop you with a few "are you sure?" error messages)
A small screen will open with some tabs across the top. Click on the "Startup" tab. This tab lists everything that is loaded when you first start your PC. Many of these things are critical, but many are not.
Identify if an application is critical or not. If it isn't, uncheck it and it won't be loaded on startup. It is important that you can easily identify the applications that you are un-checking. Unchecking the wrong ones can prevent your PC from starting up.

As an example, on my Vista PC, I un-checked only two things: the Google toolbar and the Adobe Acrobat auto-updater and my PC startup time became infinitely faster.
